Quick rules

Five rules for patches that stay on

Most peeling patches come down to one of these. Get them right and an iron-on patch can last for years.

  1. Check the care label first: if the fabric can't take a hot iron, sew or glue the patch instead
  2. Turn the steam off and use a pressing cloth between the iron and the patch
  3. Press firmly and hold still rather than sliding the iron around
  4. Press again from the inside of the garment, then let it cool completely
  5. Wait a day before washing, then wash inside out on a cool, gentle cycle
